Bedford County School Board seeks bigger budget

Macon Lavern (Mac) Stinnette, 94, of Roanoke, Va., died on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Greenfield Senior Living in Spotsylvania, Va. He was born on August 8, 1921, in Amherst, Va., to Gordon Lindsey Stinnette and Mabel Irene Sales Stinnette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Alfred M. Stinnette, Edward G. Stinnette and Carroll W. Stinnette; sister, Louise S. Scott; and nephew, Eddie A. Stinnette.Mac worked for Bethleham Steel in San Francisco, Calif., and Associated Transport in Roanoke, Va. During World War II he served from 1942 to 1946 in the United States Navy as TM First Class on the US Decatuer (destroyer North Atlantic convoy duty) and served in MTB Squadron 12 on PT 192 (Galloping Guillotine) in the South Pacific till the end of the war.Mac had a small mountain farm in Blue Ridge, Va., where he lived for 40 years and then moved to Roanoke County. He enjoyed the simple things in life and had a soft spot in his heart for his cats.Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Irene Davis Stinnette; his children, Shirley I. Stinnette Robertson and husband, Andy, of Greensboro, N.C., and Robert G. Stinnette and wife, Saundra, of Springfield, W.Va.; three granddaughters, Becky Chapman of Cary, N.C., Natalie Conrad and husband, Jeff, of Wake Forrest, N.C., and Tammy Kirk and husband, Brian, of Springfield, W.Va.; two grandsons, Timothy Robertson and wife, Crystal, of McLeansville, N.C., and Robert Stinnette Jr. and wife, Melissa, of Springfield, W.Va.; six great-grandchildren, Justin Kirk, Taylor Kirk, Ryan Stinnette and Mya Stinnette, of Springfield, W.Va., Payton Chapman of Cary, N.C., and Spencer Conrad of Wake Forrest, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives.A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Troy Mays officiating. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Oakey's North Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.oakeys.com.
