Bedford Basin Yacht Club

These are the introductory level courses for sailors over 9 years old. Here, sailors will become comfortable in their boats, while having fun! They will learn basic terminology, points of sail, boat handling, tacking and gybing and more!

While we call these the Intro sessions, sailors who are at higher levels, but do not wish to participate in the race team are able to sign up for these sessions, and will be able to work on the levels they are aiming for.

Intro Opti

Intro to Opti is a program for sailors who are under 115 lbs, and are new to sailing. This two-week program will provide them with the basics of sailing, and get them comfortable handling a boat by themselves. Students will work on their Cansail 1 - 2 levels.

Intro 420

Intro to 420 is a program for students who are over 115 lbs, and just getting to know the sport. Students will learn boat handling with two sailors in the boats, and will work on their Cansail 1-2 levels.

RACE TEAM

This year both our Opti and 420 Race teams will have a bit more structure, this is why we are asking sailors to commit to a month or two months of race team. Both the Opti and 420 Race Teams will focus on training and preparing for the regattas of the 2015 season. It is recommended that members of the Race Team come out to our Spring Training and Fall Training sessions.

Mondays after a regatta weekend will be a day off for members of the Race Team. The regatta schedule will be finalized at the beginning of the season with the Race Team and Coaches.

Opti Race Team

The Opti race team gives young sailors an opportunity to work on their racing skills, and travel to regattas throughout the province. Sailors must have their Cansail 2, and are required to attend at least one regatta. The Opti race team is a one- or two-month commitment, and is designed for sailors under 115 lbs.

420/Laser Race Team

The 420/Laser race team gives sailors an opportunity to work on their racing skills, and travel to regattas throughout the Nova Scotia. Sailors must have their Cansail 2, and are required to attend at least one regatta. The 420/Laser race team is a one-month or two-month commitment, and is designed for sailors over 115 lbs.

VOLUNTEERS

Fleet Manager: We will need someone to help us stay on top of our boat maintenance. If you have fibreglassing experience, and would like to donate a few hours of your time, please let me know.

Parent Night BBQer: We are hoping to put on a 'parents night' every other week, where students from that session are able to take their parents out sailing on the boats - however we can't do this without your support! We would like to pair this with a BBQ, as a small fundraiser for the LTS program. If you are able to donate a Monday evening every other week July-August, and are handy with a BBQ, please let me know.

Parent Night Assistant: We are hoping to put on a 'parents night' every other week, where students from that session are able to take their parents out sailing on the boats - however we can't do this without your support! We will need a parent (or a few parents) who are able to help us supervise the sailors on water, and get boats in and out of the water. Please let me know if you are able to help!

Race Team Driver(s): The LTS program no longer has access to Barry's truck (the truck we used to transport boats to and from regattas last season), as he has sold it! We will need a lot more help getting boats to and from regattas this season, so please let me know if you are able to help.
