5-year-old boy found safe in New Bedford

The case of the missing New Bedford boy has a happy ending.

Jonathan Carvalho, a spokesman for the New Bedford public schools district, late Friday afternoon cleared up some information that he and other officials had provided to news outlets regarding the boy, who was dropped off at an elementary school about 8 a.m..

The missing boy, he said, was a first grader at Ellen R. Hathaway School and he is 7 years old, not 5, as officials had originally said.

There was no taxi connected to the incident. One witness saw a taxi, saw the boy, and linked the two. But Carvalho said the taxi merely passed through the neighborhood at about the time the boy showed up outside the school.

The child was dropped off by a relative, not his parents, Carvalho said. The relative drove away without knowing the school was closed, he said.

Then a woman told the child, who was standing by himself near the front door, that the school was closed, Caravalho said. Having been taught by his parents not to speak to strangers, the first grader bolted without speaking to her.

That concerned the woman, who knew only that a young child was running down a city street without a supervising adult nearby, prompting her to call New Bedford police to report a missing child.

State and local police launched a search, school officials sent out a recorded phone call to Hathaway parents, and then followed up with human-to-human calls to parents, a multi-layered effort that ultimately led to this discovery: The child was back safe at his own home.

“He went straight to his house, ’’ Carvalho said. “This is the best kind of story. It’s a good Friday for sure.’’
