Western Australian public secondary schools are generally from Years 7 to 12 and most children start Year 7 in the year they turn 12 and start Year 12 in the year they turn 17.

By the time your child is in Year 6, you may have given some thought to which secondary school (or other post-primary schooling type) your child will attend. You will find a list of school types here.

For many students, this will be the public secondary school closest to their home. This school has a place for your child if you live within their local intake area but you will still need to apply directly with the school to secure your child’s enrolment.

All public secondary schools teach a varied and relevant curriculum taught by committed, professional teachers. Many schools offer special programs which will be of great interest to your child such as academic extension, music, a foreign language or offer sporting programs such as rugby, basketball, golf or tennis (and many others).

You may choose to send your child to another public secondary school which is outside your local area. You will need to apply directly at the and the success of your application will depend on a number of criteria including the availability of places.

Children with exceptional academic ability or creative talent may apply for in one of 17 select schools. Applicants can apply for selection from Year 5 (with testing completed in Year 6). Limited places are available for Years 7 through to Year 10.

Children with a passion in a particular area may apply to study one of more than 110 offered at 60 secondary schools.

Whatever your preference, it is advisable to make an appointment at your preferred secondary school or schools to discuss your child’s enrolment with a member of the school leadership team.
