New England School of Acupuncture and MCPHS University to explore combination.
New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) and MCPHS University, also known as Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, have entered into an agreement to explore a combination today. Founded in 1823, MCPHS is the oldest university in the City of Boston and NESA, founded in 1975 is the first school of acupuncture in the United States.
"We look forward to welcoming New England School of Acupuncture to our family of programs in the health professions, " said MCPHS President Charles F. Monahan, Jr. in a joint statement. "With NESA, we would gain world-class expertise in oriental medical practice that will add breadth to our wellestablished programs, spark the development of new inter-professional majors and strengthen our existing collaborations with universities in China and Japan."
NESA President and CEO Susan L. Gorman added: "We are excited to potentially combine our unique program with one of the world's leaders in healthcare education. NESA would continue to fulfill and extend its mission of integrating acupuncture and oriental medicine with western allopathic therapies, bringing acupuncture into the mainstream of modern medicine. MCPHS is located in the center of Boston's Longwood Area, known for its innovative medical research, teaching and clinical practice. Together, we will become the largest institution of integrative healthcare programs in the United States."
NESA, whose campus is in Newton, offers Master's degrees in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, including a dual Master's degree in Pain Management in collaboration with Tufts University School of Medicine. MCPHS, with campuses in Boston, Worcester and Manchester, New Hampshire, offers undergraduate, first-professional and graduate degrees in pharmacy, nursing, physician assistant studies, optometry, physical therapy, premedical and health studies and more than 60 other healthcare programs.
In addition to its degree programs, NESA operates a Chinese Herbal Dispensary and Professional Clinic at its Newton campus, as well as satellite clinics.at several Boston area hospitals and health centers, serving over 20, 000 patient treatments annually.
According to the agreement, New England School of Acupuncture will retain its name as one of the ten constituent schools that comprise MCPHS University. The combined institutions will enroll almost 7, 500 students drawn from 48 states and 42 countries.
