Cambridge to Oxford punt trip for Help for Heroes

From: Toby Dickens [mailto:td296@cam.ac.uk]
Subject: Cambridge to Oxford Punt in support of Help for Heroes

Dear OBMs,

I left BMS in 2007 and since then have spent my time learning to punt in Cambridge - amongst some studying. Four friends and I have finally decided to use our much practised skills, and so this summer are setting off to punt 200 miles, through 113 locks, to Oxford. The trip will hopefully only take 12 days and will see us doing battle with 17 hour days of punting, tunnels, and water deeper than the punt pole!

Why are we undertaking such a ridiculous task? We hope to raise £2000 for Help for Heroes, a charity close to everyone’s hearts given our recent conflicts.

For more tall tales and short stories from the river, please point your computer towards www.camoxpunt.wordpress.com There are lots of nice pictures, details of our gruelling training regime, and information about our media coverage so far. As well as details on how to donate - it only takes a minute.

Please circulate this as widely as you like, we hope to attract as much attention as we can in order to raise more donations.

Best,

Toby Dickens (2002-07)

OBM climbs Mt Kilimanjaro

Alex Hoppenbrouwers (OBM) writes:

I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in April 2010 in aid of Help for Heroes, which aids in the rehabilitation and recovery of wounded servicemen and women. I raised all the funds to climb the mountain myself by working as a waiter in a restaurant; this means that all sponsorship money has gone directly to Help for Heroes.

The justgiving website I have set up is www.justgiving.com/alexhoppy.

After the climb I spent time volunteering with disadavantged children in Moshi, in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, for a month.

Dick Hutchins on German TV

The TV travel programme on 'Wild Gardens of South West Cork,' featuring Dick Hutchins, was broadcast in Germany on 14th April 2010.

Formerly curator of the Prichard Museum at BMS, Klick was Director of Bedford Museum (to which the BMS collections were transferred) from 1962 until his second retirement in 1973.

Dick now lives on part of his family's former estate at Ardnagashel in Co Cork. He has restored many of the historic horticultural features bequeathed by his ancestors.

The late Mrs Marianne Elsley

Further information from OBM Club Secretary 01234 332543 or obmclub@bedmod.co.uk

Ralph Elsley writes:

Marianne was born in Rostock in North Germany in 1923. Her father was a judge and her mother a doctor. They happened to be Jewish. Her very happy childhood was shattered when Hitler came to power and his relentless persecution of the Jews began. Realising that her life, even as a child, was endangered, they sent her at the age of 15 to England by the Kindertransport, where she was lovingly cared for by a Quaker family to whom she was a complete stranger. She never saw her parents again -they were brutally murdered in Auschwitz.

Her Quaker friends enabled her to complete her schooling, after which she trained during the war as a nurse. At a hospital in Salisbury she met her husband, Ralph. She continued nursing during his six years at University and they had two children, a girl now living in America and a son who lives in London.

When Ralph became a Boarding Housemaster at BMS, she spent ten very active years as his valued and efficient assistant.

In 1970 they moved to Banbury to another teaching post, and she became the very busy and popular secretary at Overthorpe School - now the Carrdus School. She retired in 1990.

Having moved to Deddington, Marianne was for some years president of the WI, editor of the Deddington News, and member of a very enterprising craft group, and made very many friends in consequence.

She then, in order to honour the memory of her parents for the great sacrifice they made for her, wrote two books about her escape from the Nazis and the terrible fate that awaited her parents. She gave over 100 lectures based on the two books, one in America before an audience of 1500, who gave her a standing ovation. Her books were used in a BBC programme, Writing the Century, broadcast on Radio 4 in 2008.

She belonged to a local writers' group and was a very keen gardener.

Unfortunately, Parkinsons over a period of ten years or more deprived her of the ability to do any of the very many things she had enjoyed so much and did so well. Her profound deafness robbed her of the pleasures of social life and her love of music.

The late Mr Joe Cox

Mr Joe Cox (Staff 1954-83) died peacefully in his sleep on 6th October 2009, aged 88, following a long illness.

Donations to SSAFA Forces Help (Homes for Heroes) may be sent to Arnolds Funeral Service, 48 Roff Avenue, Bedford MK41 7TE.

An OBM helps out in Romania

Ricky Thakrar (2001-2005) visited the town of Comanesti in Romania with 33 other volunteers from the charity TEECH this August. Having collected aid throughout the year, they distributed items to a hospital, school for gypsies, orphanage and a day centre for students with special needs.

"It was great that we were able to work hard in the daytime and get to know one another in the evenings - sampling the various local liquors and watering holes along the way," said Ricky.

They also had the opportunity to begin refurbishing a fire-damaged computer room at the Foundation for Life Centre and install flushing toilets and running water to a home provided by the Mayor for those with nowhere else to live. For more information, visit www.teech.org or contact rickythakrar[at]gmail.com.

During summer 2009 I cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for the Red Cross. When I was in Year 13 (Upper VIth) we managed to raise about £400 for them by running the Great South Run.
